Laboratory Testing and Modeling to Evaluate Perfluorocarbon Compounds as Tracers in Geothermal Systems

چکیده
The thermal stability and adsorption characteristics of three perfluorinated hydrocarbon compounds were evaluated under geothermal conditions to determine the potential to use these compounds as conservative or thermally-degrading tracers in Engineered (or Enhanced) Geothermal Systems (EGS). The three compounds tested were perfluorodimethylcyclobutane (PDCB), perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH), and perfluorotrimethylcyclohexane (PTCH), which are collectively referred to as perfluorinated tracers, or PFTs. Two sets of duplicate tests were conducted in batch mode in goldbag reactors, with one pair of reactors charged with a synthetic geothermal brine containing the PFTs and a second pair was charged with the brine-PFT mixture plus a mineral assemblage chosen to be representative of activated fractures in an EGS reservoir. A fifth reactor was charged with deionized water containing the three PFTs. The experiments were conducted at ~100 bar, with temperatures ranging from 230C to 300C. Semi-analytical and numerical modeling was also conducted to show how the PFTs could be used in conjunction with other tracers to interrogate surface area to volume ratios and temperature profiles in EGS reservoirs. Both single-well and cross-hole tracer tests are simulated to illustrate how different suites of tracers could be used to accomplish these objectives. The single-well tests are especially attractive for EGS applications because they allow the effectiveness of a stimulation to be evaluated without drilling a second well.

Tracers for Characterizing Enhanced Geothermal Systems
Information about the times of thermal breakthrough and subsequent rates of thermal drawdown in enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) is necessary for reservoir management, designing fracture stimulation and well drilling programs, and forecasting economic return. Thermal breakthrough in heterogeneous porous media can be estimated using conservative tracers and assumptions about heat transfer rates...
متن کاملTracer Testing at Dixie Valley, Nevada Using 1-naphthalene Sulfonate and 2,6-naphthalene Disulfonate
The decay kinetics of the candidate tracers 1naphthalene sulfonate and 2,6-naphthalene disulfonate was studied under laboratory conditions that simulate a hydrothermal environment. Neither of the naphthalene sulfonates exhibited any thermal decay after one week at 330C, indicating that they are suitable for use in geothermal settings having temperatures of 330C or hotter. Both tracers were succ...
متن کاملReducing Cost and Environmental Impact of Geothermal Power through Modeling of Chemical Processes in the Reservoir
Geothermal power generation and mineral extraction from geothermal brines are affected by chemical processes within the reservoir. Until recently, numerical simulation technology for geothermal systems could not handle most chemical processes, except for tracking total salinity, one or two noncondensable gases, and non-reactive tracers. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has devel...
متن کاملTracer Testing at Dixie Valley, Nevada, Using 2-naphthalene Sulfonate and 2,7-naphthalene Disulfonate
The decay kinetics of the candidate tracers 2naphthalene sulfonate and 2,7-naphthalene disulfonate was studied under laboratory conditions that simulate a hydrothermal environment, with neither compound exhibiting any decay after one week at 330C. These data indicate that these compounds are more thermally stable than any of the previously studied polyaromatic sulfonates. Both of the tracer can...
متن کاملThermal Decay of Selected Organic Substances as "smart Tracers" in Geothermal Reservoirs
The aim of the laboratory experiments presented here is to find a set of thermosensitive tracers to identify thermal characteristics in deep geothermal reservoirs during the long-term operation of a power plant. In the near future several short-term push-pull experiments are planned at different test-sites in northern Europe. As a first step we focus on tracers which fulfill the requirements of...
